Collaboration Forums – Create periodic forums for all watershed stakeholders to gather and discuss issues.
1.Convene an informal consortium of watershed land managers, preferably twice per year.
2. Identify two specific watershed issues requiring greater collaboration and convene appropriate forums.
3. Continue participation in Colorado Watershed Assembly and National River Network.
Annual Watershed Report Card – Prepare an annual report that “grades” various aspects of the watershed and shows trends between years.
1. Secure funding for Report Card
2. Create overall goals for Report Card and a preliminary outline
3. Hire Report Card Coordinator(s)
4. Create Report Card
Education – Support the creation and delivery of watershed education materials throughout the watershed.
1. Revisit overall goals and structure of newsletter to accommodate quarterly electronic format, and then deliver quarterly newsletters.
2. Establish Lunchtime and Evening Learning program and deliver six (6) sessions (perhaps hire part-time coordinator). Offer repeats of at least two sessions in Norwood and/or Naturita/Nucla.
3. Organize one Watershed Education Field Trip
4. Promote other member-delivered education programs (eg. TI’s Watershed Education Program)
Monitoring – Enable and coordinate the monitoring, measurement, and reporting of various indicators in the watershed.
1. Revisit overall goals of the River Ranger program to establish clear expectations and deliverables.
2. Explore opportunities for increased measurement/reporting and improved coordination of measurement/reporting.
3. Explore opportunities presented by planned USGS monitoring database
4. Explore opportunities for greater involvement from schools (eg. River Watch, Community Service Requirement)
Restoration – Identify and pursue opportunities for ecological restoration in the watershed.
1. Complete South Fork Confluence restoration project.
2. Identify other specific restoration opportunities and pursue funding
3. Promote other member-delivered restoration activities (eg. TNC projects, Greenbucks, etc)
Membership/Fundraising – Encourage broad membership from throughout the watershed and raise working funds from membership dues and/or from direct solicitations.
1. Create a plan for a membership/fundraising campaign.
2. Launch the campaign via various media and direct mail solicitation.
3. Measure success of campaign and make adjustments.
4. Compile membership roster including email addresses.
5. Raise $10,000 by coordinating four invitation-only events at unique watershed locations
6. Encourage each Board Member to take personal responsibility for growing membership and soliciting contributions.
7. Establish fundraising goal to cover 75% of all ongoing administrative costs (remaining 25% to come from “project oversight” component of specific projects funded by grants)
Grant Coordination Clearinghouse – Maximize the amount of grant money entering the watershed by providing a clearing house service to ensure that the coalition’s members (or the coalition itself) are pursuing all possible sources without competing unnecessarily.
1. Create specific goals and a plan for the Clearinghouse.
2. Hire Clearinghouse coordinator (part-time contractor).
3. Launch the Clearinghouse.
4. Measure success and make adjustments
5. Create SMWC Common Grant Application and distribute as appropriate
Ongoing Coordination – Keep track of key issues and activities in the watershed, reporting back to members and stakeholders to encourage continuing cooperation.
1. Howard’s Fork clean up.
Administration – Fulfill all required financial, human resources, and other organizational functions for the Coalition.
1. Oversee financial management, IRS filings, pay bills, track and report grant monies, track annual budget, and report on financial status to the board.
2. Institute formal staff review program as necessary
3. Purchase Directors’ and Operators’ Insurance for Board members
4. Determine needs for office space, phone, etc.
5. Establish SMWC website
6. Maintain memberships in Colorado Watershed Assembly and River Network
